Task2d Inquiry

Task 2d Inquiry

Some morning, I get up bed actively. Some morning, I get up bed very slowly, fighting with the tiredness and fighting to the temptation of warm comfortable bed.
But, to be honest when I wake up, Sunny or Wet, Cold or Warm, Dark or Shine, they do not really matter to me. Yes, he weather and he temperature do EFFECT my body and mind, as I am a human. But, as long as I know that there is a class in a morning, I happily jump up from the bed!
Having a class in a morning makes me really excited and enthusiastic!

Some people say, another day, another class and they cannot be bothered doing classes anymore! But, I really do not understand that:S
Doing a class is not just a warm up for a day to me. When I am doing a class, I am talking to my body; I am having a conversation to my body through the exercise and music.
Someday, my body is tired and a bit stiff. Someday, my body is so light, happy and feels like there is no limit!
When I dance, I use my body as an instrument. So, doing a class for me, it is like tuning an instrument. And, the instrument`s condition affected by the weather and even small change of the temperature.
So, when tune it, I have to be very thrift, listen carefully, feel carefully. So, I do not miss any small modifications the instrument makes. And, this is very important that to be very patient about this process! It is like diving in to the sea. Not important how fast I swim, the important thing is not to rush, slowly dive deeper and deeper inside of my body and mind. Eventually, my body and mind get quiet, calm, world feels so slow and silence, my mind becomes blank.

When I am doing class, I always try to leave my emotion outside of the studio. Because feeling and mood do effect to our movement. That is not a bad thing, which is a wonderful thing what makes us as human, not robots! Otherwise, we cannot create something artistic to share with people.
However, I believe solid, flawless technique is essential for ballet. Like if actors wish to act on stage so naturally, so freely, they got to speak clearly and pronounce correctly. Actors use their voice to speak; we dancers use our flawless technique to share something with the audience.
So, we must train and keep the physical standard high and, as ready as possible to perform on stage. It is like sharpen a knife every day, if the knife does not get sharpened, it will get rusty and dull. It won`t be able to cut any thing L

So, in classes, I just have to focus on my body, mind and technique.
Well, more precisely explained, I am harmonizing my body, mind and technique. These aren`t three different things, they are together as one. Supposed be!
As I mentioned before I use my body as an instrument, however when I am dancing, my body does not just work as an instrument. There is a big orchestra in side of me when I am dancing. My brain is the conductor, arms, legs, body, back, legs, feet….They all become different instruments. Well, more likely they react to the music and all move differently. Like a percussion!
However, I cannot get in to this level or stage of mind and body often L as my dancing standard is far from perfect. But, roughly once in a month, when my body and mind are equally awake and ready, they coordinate and harmonize so well, then I can slowly get in to the world of my own! I guess, good dancers can get in to this stage even every day, much quicker than I do. And, they are feeling and experiencing something I have never felt and experienced before!
Hopefully, one day I can get that standard or least would like to get as close as I can!
Probably, that is one of the reasons why I go to the studio and train myself every day.

And, another reason I dance is, of course, because I love being on stage J
However, the aporose from the audience, that can be dangerous.
Only because sometimes when dancers do bad performances, still somehow the audiences love it and when dancers do great performance, sometimes the audiences do not response. What I meant is I do not just perform to make the audience happy.
If I started to do that, I think I will lose myself and my emotion will be controlled by only how the audiences react to my performances.
Again, however! When I danced at London with my company in last November, at curtain call, when I came back on stage I received an amazing applause,
I got confused, and I asked myself `have I provided that amazing performance? `. It was life changing! I felt the audience’s emotions and feelings by my whole body! The audience`s applause was like a big wave, went through my body.
I felt like I really shared some thing with them J

I use to get happy when I do the exercise well, use to get upset if I do it wrongly.
However, I realize that they aren`t so important any more.
The quality of movement is the priority, how I do it, what I feel it, that is the key to get to the truth, I think.

I prepare and think about next day night before. All the corrections I got, things I need to make better or right. So, to me, morning is not really the begging of the day.
Especially when I am on tour, I start to prepare for next performance straight after I have finished a performance. I usually eat dinner when technicians are doing get out from the theatre after the performance. Then I stretch my body, I thank my body for working hard, and I ask my body through massage by my hands, how is the condition and what my body need, stiff? Pain? And think about how did the performance go, what was good, what went wrong, how, why? How can I make it right by next day`s performance. When things do not go right, I sometimes even go back to the stage after the performance and try things till I get right. To some people, I look like a hard worker. But, the truth is I am just discovering and experimenting through my body :)
Like a kid playing at play ground. Like a scientist experiment his work in his laboratory!
To me, the stage is my play ground and also a laboratory!

Well, this does not sound very professional, does it?
Then, let me think what is being a professional dancer?
Well, I do have a responsibility to provide quality performances as a professional, as I get paid! However, being a dancer and working as professional is more like a mission to me.
Especially in this industry, if I started feel like it is a JOB or WORK, I mean losing the passion of being on stage, losing interest and curiosity for ballet; I think everything will fall in to pieces.
I do not think it will be possible to create and provide something beautiful, so precious to share with the audience without passion and right principal. I might be wrong L but, that is what I think at the moment.

Task2b Reflective Journal

Task 2b Reflective Journal

I had an interesting and very crazy day about a few weeks ago. And, I thought this will be a good theme for my Reflective Journal.

I am a dancer who worked in both classic and contemporary. The company I work for, we have only eight dancers. There are no apprentice or under study or anything. So, in my company injury is a taboo word :S
As I wrote till now, I think people can guess what I am going to write. Yes, that was two weeks before the end of the winter tour, one of our the male dancers injured his foot.
It seems like girls always get injuries but just do not tell people and get on with it. One of the female dancers in the company, her big toe was fractured or broken. But, she just carried on dancing till the end of the tour. She only kept in herself! Bless her.

Anyways, one of our male dancers injured and came back with the crutches, we were all shocked! As you can imagine we have only eight dancers in the company, we all dance lots to cover up. So, even one dancer is off, that is a serious situation to us! The emergency bell was ringing in side of my brain.

It was not just that. The dancer who injured did not communicate with any of us and just suddenly came back with the crutches. He actually hurt his foot a day before and he seemed not happy. The director was not pleased with his behaviour. And, it was only a few hours before the performance. You can imagine how hectic it can get! He just did not let anyone know where he was and what he was doing. If, he could let us know about the situation, we could planed an extra rehearsal to cover his part.

Some of the dancers were panicking, some of them were angry, some of them were calm, some of were cursing him :S. It was interesting to see different individual reactions to the situation.
When I saw him with crutches, first thing which came in to my mind was work out what I need to do to cover up his part. I was kind of calm. It is a serious situation but it was not first time something like this happened. People wish or not, we get injury some times and there is nothing wrong with getting an injury. It is just a part of our job, unfortunately. But, important thing is how to communicate with the others and do everything I can to help the situation.

So, we got together and rehearsed very quickly! Everyone tried their best to learn new steps and remember the different timing, sequences as fast as we could! It was very serious and stressful situation. However it was also a little bit exiting to do something different to usual! We did not have much time for this last minute rehearsal, while we were rehearsing and panicking a bit, I actually felt the time so raw, the passing through of time so physically. That is something I do not usually feel in normal rehearsals, because we rehearse what we already know and kind of relaxed in a way. So, that was different!

Well, the performance went well, Thank to God!
The situation demanded an extra pressure and concentration on us.
However, when we finished the night, it felt so good and we felt we all did a great job together as a team!
It actually went really good considering one dancer was missing and we did only last minute rehearsal!
However, it could go horribly wrong. I would hate to imagine but, the worst situation could be happened was someone lose their concentration and leads us to another accidents, chain reaction of different injury :S

If, I was the director, what will I do? How will I react to the situation?
To be honest, that is something I do not want to imagine or that could be the worst thing to be happened. Especially if I get to know only a few hours before the performance!
Probably I will try to be calm, and think what need to be done and tell the dancers as quick as possible, so dancers have some time to prepare for the situation and digest the all choreograph. End of the day only dancers can dance on the stage and not much director can do once the curtain is up.
In the situation, I think the director`s job is to calm the dancers and relax them as much as possible, as already there is so much pressure on them!
It would very stressful and not nice day as the director. But, if I was a director, I would make sure that dancers to be aware of injury from the beginning and ask them to lean other people`s role roughly, just in case of emergency!

Generally, the day went very quickly because of the incident. Well, I felt like it was a short day because it was so busy!

Things I have realised and learned from the day and the incident

When I analyse how I reacted to the day and to the incidence, I was surprisingly calm, and adapted to the situation quickly and well, surprisingly! I also realised that it is not great to get injury, for your own sake and for everyone`s sake. But, injury is something we can`t avoid in this business. So, if we get one, better face it! And take it positively and make a move swiftly, not just for yourself, for everyone sake. So, if we get one, we better commutate with the director, rehearsal director and rest of the team as quick as possible. And talk about the situation and provide the best solution, and do our best to assist the situation as much as we can, even with the injury, we are still are team. Team can only function properly when we communicate and help each other!

Professional Communication Technologies

The Root of Information

These are what I think of the essential sources of information.
Not just to find opportunities of employments, to research the dance style of the guest choreographers, There back ground, also to understand more about the piece we are performing, ie, when was the premier, which country, what was the back ground of history when it choreographed,
Who danced premier, how did audience and critics reacted, etc

Internet

Well, of course. To me, internet is the most convenience, efficient, ecological and quickest way to dig the information I need.
And, the information of the internet up dates every moments! And, it links to the information of the world. That is the main reason I think the internet is one the most important and essential generator of communication technologies to provide the informations.

When I look for an employment, Dance Europe audition website is one of the most practical web site, as this is the most famous dance magazine in Europe, the information they provide is constantly up dates, very reliable.  http://www.danceeurope.net/site/jobs.shtml
Also when I look for a dance job in Germany, as arts and culture is very popular in Germany and they have so many dance companies! I visit  BallettTanz`s audition web site.
http://www.ballet-tanz.de/en/audit-fr.html This site does not get up dated as much as Dance Europe`s audition web site, However they introduce more of German dance companies auditions information than Dance Europe.
I am also a member of Dancers pro web site..http://www.dancerspro.com/ Once you have registered to this site, This site could be the biggest source of dance job information. dancerspro`s audition information up dates constantly and they e-mail me almost every day to let me know all the people and company who is looking for dancers.
And, e-mails are very easy to look and understand, where, who, what type of dance, how much can they offer, including expense or not, how long is the employment .
  Like this ;D

  Speaking to Individuals

Well, in this way, we get more raw information than internet. And, it could be more reliable than web information, well, I guess depend on the person is reliable or not :S.
How ever, I also think there is different kind of information people can provide to the internet. Like a quality of information will be much more detailed, I believe. But, also we all feel different so If 10 people work in same dance company, there is a possibility that they all bring us totally different quality of data! In that case, web could pass on more general, fair informations.

  Books, Magazines, Papers.
I believe all of these provides again different quality of informations. How ever, if I see from Professional Communication Technophiles point of view, unfortunately I do not think they could as reliable as first two. One of the reason is I already mentioned when I wrote about internet, the information of the world changes and up dates every moments. For that reason, if I talk about information, first two, internet and speaking to people is more up dated and reliable.

How ever, as I said these books, magazines and papers can provide different type of information. much more deeper, and could be more personal and sincere. Again, it depends on who wrote :S but, if they already has published that means several people had read and checked the where the informations came from, how reliable they are. So, could be much more authentic than people` s words, as people can make up what ever they want, I they wanted to. I am sure most of people do not do things like that. But, even we try to be honest and as close as possible to the truth, some times without realising, we spread the different information adding our own emotions in to the right information.

White Noise and Movement

Hello to the people who is reading my blog. And, thank you for reading this ;)

I did a class on a very slipy floor the other day. It was one of the theatre`s studio we performed last week.
When I use do class on a slipy floor, I use to tense my muscles tight not to slip, to against the floor, ie, turn out of the legs.
However, this time I realised that, tighten my muscles on a slippy floor does not do anything. It might feel like holding on to the floor, but, not really :S
I just have to relax and loose my body even more than usual.
I can feel my centre clearer as I relax and as my body parts get loosely separated.
I am not sure this makes sense to everyone, but certainly make sense to me because I felt it J
Right, What I mean is like this.
Our ballet mistress often tell us to cut off `White Noise` in movements. White noise is the noise which makes harder to hear or harder to see on TV and Radio. What she means is we all do unnecessary movement in general. Especially when we dance. Well, I say especially when I dance :S
CLEARLITY. That is what out ballet mistress means of White Noise.
Let`s cut off all the meaningless movements, meaning less habits, to make it so pure and so simple, as pure as it possibly gets and as simple as movements can be.
Then suddenly I remember my teacher told me before `Daisuke, as less as you do, as better as movements get!`. What an wisdom! However, things aren`t that simple L If, it is, I am not writings this. I will be writing like `I am the greatest dancer in the world! YEY, YEY!` instead.
Any ways, doing a class on a slipy floor was a wonderful opportunity for me to rethink and relearn how to make my movement clearer and more pure. Because on a usual dance floor, My movements aren`t so clear ie Turns, My centre moves but my muscles adjust while I am turning without noticing. However, on a slipy floor, movements can not lie! More extra movements I do, farther I get from the movements I want. Even tiny small extra movements effect so much to the movements on slipy floor.
So, this time instead of trying to hold by muscles, I relaxed and loosened my body, to feel my centre clearly.
First, I tried to make my movements as clear as I can, to feel my centre. Then, gradually it appeared. It is like walking in a deep fog, looking for something. Then, suddenly fog clears and the something was just in front of you, I just could not see it was so close because I was blinded by the fog. Or I was on it, so I could not see.
Any ways, from now on I will try to do class like I am on a slipy floor.
Do you know. There is a part of training of Martial Ats that, People demonstrate their movements on a very thin wet paper, On a floor full of sand! And, of course they aren`t allowed to rip the paper they are demonstrate on!
I shall try to dance like they move!

Spine and Coccyx

Hello!

Yesterday, I found more about my body :D

Most animals walk by four legs, but, some animals when they are in danger, they stand up and stand on Two legs! Like a human, Like what we do. But, when I watched carefully I realised that they are standing on there two legs but balancing by their tail! Then I realised why my ballet teacher always tell us to feel our Coccyx : Tail Bone. It is the BALANCE BONE! When I balanced yesterday I thought about there is a tail from my tail bone and balancing by that. It was totally different feeling! I did not use muscle to hold on to it any more! Tail bone is the third leg and I shall call THE balance leg!
End of the day, our leg can be part of our spine, and our spine can be our legs, As we all evolved from Vertebrata!
Does it make sense?

Dancing and Swimming

Hi!

I had an important performance at Cardiff Millennium Centre last Saturday.
It went well and after the performance, I showed my face to the reception to say hello to the Sponsors and Patrons, As it is a part of my contract.
And, I have given an advice from ex dancer who now teaches in Cardiff to relax my spine more.
So I went to swimming to feel my spine in the water. I tried to swim like fishes and snakes, not using hands and arms, from the spine, and it was strangely difficult! I tried to feel my Cocyx and Sacrum. It was interesting :S Hope I can feel spine more tomorrow.
